Big week for Jim Furyk.
He’s sitting in a precarious spot on the FedEx Cup.
He’s at 94.
Only the top 100 come Sunday afternoon will move on to the TPC Boston for the second leg of the playoffs.
He’s in another precarious spot as well — No. 15 on the Ryder Cup points list, which goes final on Sunday afternoon.
If he has any hope at all of making the Ryder Cup team, you’d figure Furyk HAS to make the cut on Friday. A missed cut will likely bounce him from the playoffs and perhaps make his Ryder Cup bubble more likely to burst.
Sure, he’s been pretty hot lately. He graduated from “Mr. 59” to “Mr. 58.”
He made a nice run in Greensboro last week before fading down the stretch.
A high finish this week could move him closer in the Ryder Cup and send him to Boston.
Good news is that this is a difficult golf course, a grinder’s golf course and old Jimmy is a career grinder.
As far as the Ryder Cup goes, there his match play record in the event hanging around his neck like a decaying Albatross.
It stinks. Add the fact that at age 46, this is probably his last chance to play in the event.
Furyk is an unflattering 10-24-4 and has played on the last nine USA teams. His four-ball record is an embarrassing 2-8-1.
Captain’s pick? You’d sure like to know what was in those Tiger Woods texts to Davis Love III.
For now, this one’s still somewhat in Furyk’s control. So the next four days are so very important to him.
No pressure, right?
