What happens when you let two very good PGA Tour players try their hand at a two-man scramble?
Easy. You get a really, really low score.
How about 14-under par for Matt Kuchar and Harris English Thursday at the Franklin Templeton Shootout?
“We started out hot, Kooch made a 40-footer on the first hole and we closed pretty strong,” is how English described their day as they posted a 58 that gave them a one-shot lead in the 54-hole event at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples.
“I didn’t putt a lot today,” said Kuchar, who putted second behind Harris. “We hit a lot of shots in there close.”
Harris holed a 12-footer for birdie at the closing hole to put him and Kuchar a shot clear of Gary Woodland and Graeme McDowell and the team of Billy Horschel and Hunter Mahan.
“We’re both playing well,” Woodland said. “His (McDowell’s) short game was on point like it always is.”
A total of 12 teams are competing over the three days. Friday’s format will be a modified alternate shot and Saturday’s final round will be best ball.
