Matt Every had three simple words to describe the 61 he shot Thursday at the Wyndham Championship.
“A career day,” said the player who basically needs a victory to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs next week.
“To be honest I really didn’t make anything,” Every said as he looked back on his round that saw him hole out from 104 yards for eagle on his first hole of the day.
“Everything was like a tap-in,” he said.
That was about the size of it. He hit both the par fives and had easy two-putt birdies at five and 15. His other birdies came from a foot, four feet, six feet, five feet and there was one monster putt from 14 feet. That’s it.
“It’s great to be playing good,” Every said after grabbing the first round lead. He’s currently tied for 183rd on the FedEx Cup points list and needs a victory to get himself into the playoffs. “I’m playing well enough where I feel if I can get into the playoffs, I could do something,” Every said.
He found some motivation last week when he was sitting at home watching the others play in the PGA Championship.
“I always get motivated when I’m not there playing,” he added.
