Justin Thomas admitted after the CIMB Classic that he was basically “out of gas.”
His tie for 17th showed it.
Somewhere between Malaysia and South Korea Thomas got the tank refilled.
That’s the way it looked during Thursday’s first round of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges on Jeju Island off the South Korean mainland.
Thomas played the back nine first, made a couple of eagles on the par fives and never looked back on a day where no wind made it easy for him.
He had predicted earlier in the week that he could go low and he did with a nine-under par 63.
That was good for a three-shot lead over a couple of players who will find it tough to threaten Thomas when he’s playing well. Gavin Green and Scott Brown both finished with 66s.
