When Jack Nicklaus turned 70, he laughed as he talked about his golf game and declared: “Everyone wanted to play like me, now they can.”
That was nearly 10 years ago. Jack is about to turn 79, Lee Trevino is already 79 and if you’re curious about the state of their golf games, you can scratch that itch this weekend.
The 2018 version of the PNC Father-Son Challenge is upon us and this year’s event starts Saturday at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.
It’s a 36-hole scramble and that works well for Jack because his grandson, G.T., can hit it about 320. G.T. became an instant celebrity last spring when he made a hole-in-one on the ninth hole of the Wednesday par-three contest — he was his grandfather’s caddie.
People no doubt want to see if Little John Daly is any larger than he was last year.
Jim Furyk’s in the field for the first time — he’ll play with his father Mike, who is a PGA professional.
There are 20 teams total and if you want to look at the absolute favorites, it would have to be Davis Love III and son Dru. Davis plays the Champions Tour and the regular PGA Tour still, still has great length and plenty of game and Dru is an aspiring tour player.
