This isn’t the kind of news you want to see in Scotland, especially on the hallowed grounds at Carnoustie.
In the wee hours last Sunday, a body was found in the famous, or in the case of Jean Van De Velde, the infamous Barry Burn that fronts the 18th green at the famous golf links.
The body of Dean Morrison was discovered at around 12:40 p.m. near the Carnoustie Golf Hotel after a three-hour search. Morrison was reportedly an officer with the Tayside Police for the past 16 years.
The local police have come out and said they don’t suspect any malfeasance was involved there, but they may want to spend some time and find out what may have caused office Morrison to fall into the Burn. They were looking to speak with the taxi driver who picked Morrison up at 11:13 p.m. Saturday before dropping him off in Carnoustie.
“Dean was a highly respected officer, who was extremely well-liked and popular with his colleagues. He was thoroughly professional in his work,” said Tayside divisional commander Andrew Todd. “His death is a great tragedy and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and we will do all we can to support them during this distressing time.”
Distressing indeed. It’s a long way to the bottom of the Burn and it’s not a place where you’d want to be staggering around, especially if one had over-indulged.
We’ll look for more news on this one.
