Don’t look for much golf action on Saturday’s broadcast of the Phoenix Open.
It will be all about Johnny Miller.
In a way, it’s always been that way. Throughout his broadcast career, how many times have we been reminded about the 63 at Oakmont?
Too many to count, that’s for sure.
And after listening to Johnny talk about how good he used to be for what seems like forever, well, it’s hard to fathom that this guy only won two majors, not even as many as Larry Nelson.
So yes, there will be countless tributes and suck-ups to Johnny on Saturday’s telecast on NBC as he brings his long tenure to a close.
He’ll be signing off on Saturday, that way they can waste more time on Johnny and show less golf. On Sunday it’s a different story. With the tournament winner to be determined, they didn’t want to detract from that so Miller’s place will be quietly taken by Paul Azinger, the man dubbed to replace him.
So on Super Sunday, we’ll get Dan Hicks and a new taste of Zinger.
On Saturday, well, if you’re not a huge Johnny Miller fan, there are probably a lot of good basketball games on the tube.

Miller has provided us with unfiltered insight into the game for many years. So I really do not understand the issue you have with his 63 at Oakmont mentions. I have never had an issue hearing about that any more than I have with reading your bio after each article how you had the best article in 1980 according to the GWAA. Pot calling the kettle black?

BobO: I didn’t realize anyone read that bio…..as for Miller and the 63, I’ve heard about that more times than Sergio Garcia has waggles……I can tell you this from someone on the NBC broadcast team, Johnny really thinks very highly of himself, which should come as no surprise. I’m looking forward to seeing what Zinger brings to the broadcast…
