Rory McIlroy could probably use a good stiff drink about now.
Rory’s been a total underachiever on Sunday’s for quite a while and this past Sunday at Bay Hill was no different.
McIlroy’s final round started okay, two pars then he drained a sweet birdie putt from 27 feet at the third hole to tie Matt Fitzpatrick for the early lead. But that would be his one and only highlight of the final 18 holes.
McIlroy missed from inside six feet for birdie at the par five fourth then couldn’t birdie the sixth either. He pulled his tee shot at the par three seventh, made bogey and pretty much set the tone for the rest of the round.
In the end, he only birdied one par five, the 16th — the easiest hole on the course. He had just 153 yards in, hit his approach to inside 12 feet then, of course, could not make the very makeable eagle putt.
By day’s end, Rory’s 72 left him tied for sixth. He’s now been in the final group seven times over the past 12 months and hasn’t come through.
And that run of fourth round failures has earned Rory a few days in the Dog House.
