Royal Portrush is the most famous landmark in the seaside resort town of Portrush in Northern Ireland.
Second most famous and the center of the off-course universe last week was the Harbour Bar and it’s now world-famous bartender — Willie Gregg.
Gregg and the bar were featured time an again during the week of coverage by the Golf Channel and NBC. Former Open champion Darren Clarke declared it to be his favorite watering hole.
“This is a proper bar — no wi-fi, no cell phones — people talk to each other here,” said Gregg, who shows patrons how to pour a perfect pint of Guinness.
With more than 247,000 spectators at the 148th Open Championship, the return to Ireland was a huge success and the Harbour Bar is more recognizable than a lot of the players who showed up this past week.
No telling how many pints of Guinness were poured by Willie and the Harbour Bar crew.
The bar is about the size of a wealthy person’s master closet but that doesn’t stop everyone from cramming in there to see Willie.
And for the record — it’s also dog-friendly.
Yes, There Was An LPGA Team Event:
A PGA Tour team event is boring enough but the ladies have one too.
The team of Cydney Clanton and Jasmine Suwannapura blew the field away at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. Seriously, they had to be invited to play in this?
Anyway, Clanton and Suwannapura shot 27 under and won by six.
A lot of the bigger names didn’t show up. They were preparing for this week’s major over in France, The Evian.
