When it rains in Mayakoba, it really rains. Hard.
That’s what happened on Sunday when a deluge delayed play at the OHL Classic for more than two hours and the final round will take place Monday morning with an 8 a.m. start.
When the field returns to soggy El Camaleon Golf Club, it will be Russell Knox and Graeme McDowell in position to fight it out for the title over the last five holes.
Both went really low on Sunday when darkness halted play. McDowell had just birdied the 13th hole to go six-under for the day and 19-under for the tournament. He’s tied with Russell Knox, last week’s winner at the HSBC Champions.
Knox will have a chance to get to 20-under when he gets to finish the par five 13th.
They are two in front of Jason Bohn. Bohn is 17-under par and was two-under through 12-holes on the day.
Overnight leader Derek Fathauer showed some nerves to start his final round with a bogey on the first hole. He was on-over for his round through 12 holes and had fallen four shots off the pace of McDowell and Knox.
Scott Brown was tied with Fathauer. He’s four-under through 13 holes.
McDowell is looking for his first victory since 2013 and is trying to break out of a year-long slump.
McDowell took a major step toward victory as he finally figured out how to make par at the first hole. He did that on Sunday after playing the hole five-over par in his three previous rounds.
