Peyton Manning likes to hum that “Nationwide is on my side….”
Nationwide is really on Jack Nicklaus’ side and it proved it this week by putting up some serious money to remain as the lead sponsor of the Memorial Tournament through the year 2021.
Nationwide has been with Jack at The Memorial since 2011 and will stay there for at least another half-dozen years.
The event is staged at Nicklaus’ masterpiece — The Muirfield Village Golf Club. The 2016 event will see the total prize money jump from last year’s $6.2 million to a whopping $8.5 million with the winner taking away $1.615 million.
On top of that, the winner of this event earns a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour, as does the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Major championships carry a five-year exemption while regular tour wins are for two years.
The event is the main golf attraction for central Ohio and the course was built on land where Nicklaus went hunting with his father as a youngster.
