Those nasty Europeans need to go pick on someone their own size.
Perhaps they are concerned that potential U.S. Ryder Cuppers get to squash the Internationals at the Presidents Cup.
Enter the EURASIA Cup.
It was staged over the weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and it was a runaway of major proportions. Final score was 18 1/2 to 5 1/2 in favor of the Euros led by Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke.
“We played some wonderful golf,” Clarke said after his team ran roughshod over the Asians, whose recognizable players included Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand, Anirban Lahiri and Byeong Hun An. Jaidee is the highest ranked Asian at 27th in the world, Aphibarnrat is 38th.
The Euros countered with Danny Willett (19th), Shane Lowry (21), Victor DuBuisson (32), Bernd Weisberger (33) and Andy Sullivan (36) with veterans Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood among others who had no trouble disposing of the lads from Asia.
A bunch of European stalwarts weren’t even there. Rory McIlroy, third in the world, Justin Rose, seventh, Sergio Garcia, 13th and Paul Casey, 22nd, weren’t there but will be come Ryder Cup time.
All this turned out to be was a practice session for some of the less experienced players like 21-year-old Matthew Fitzpatrick. The young Englishman is ranked 44th in the world and destined to become a Ryder Cup fixture of the future.
The final day was about as ho-hum as it gets with the Euros winning 10 of the 12 singles matches.
Hopefully the U.S. lads can man-up this year and put up a fight in late September at Hazeltine.
