When it comes to vistas and incredible visual images, you simply cannot beat Pebble Beach.
It’s the place Bing Crosby chose decades ago to start a little gathering for his friends. “The Clambake” became one of the most popular stops on the PGA Tour. The Crosby name is long gone but Pebble Beach remains, standing strong as perhaps the finest golf course in America.
It’s the course Jack Nicklaus said he’d play if he had to choose just one.
That endorsement simply punctuates the splendor that is Pebble.
It is now the AT&T Pro-Am and AT&T’s poster boy — Jordan Spieth — is back from his globetrotting. He should be rested and he’s not the only star in the field. Jason Day is back, hopefully recovered from the flu. It knocked him out of the action at Torrey Pines after 36 holes.
Bubba Watson is showing up to play with Mark Wahlberg and maybe even Bubba can like Pebble Beach.
The winner will have to be versatile enough to make his way around two other courses. Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club are the other two in the rotation with Sunday’s conclusion moving the remaining players back to Pebble Beach.
Along with Spieth, Day and Watson, you can add Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson into the mix. Spieth and his partner will play the first three days with Johnson and his father-in-law, Wayne Gretzky.
The man with the most momentum coming in is Brandt Snedeker. He is the defending champion and the winner at Torrey Pines two weeks ago at The Farmers.
A win by Snedeker would make him the seventh man to win back-to-back at the event.
