The one thing that transpired Thursday with some consistency during the first round of the AT&T Pro-Am is that the highest-ranked, the big name players in the field, started off like turtles.
On a day where Chez Reavie shot 63 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Freddie Jacobson put up a 65 at Pebble Beach, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Bubba Watson didn’t do anything to write home about.
All three started the three-course adventure at Spyglass Hill, which is not an easy layout. Spieth and Day managed to shoot one-under par 71s while Watson couldn’t get into red numbers. He opened with a 73 at Spyglass. Dustin Johnson played in the same pairing with Spieth and bested him by a shot, shooting 70.
Justin Rose, playing in the event for the first time, got a leg up on the field with a 66 at Spyglass.
Phil Mickelson was able to show up his younger counterparts. Lefty had no problems shooting a four-under par 68 at Spyglass.
The big names and the big-name celebrities played Spyglass on Thursday and will move over to Monterey on Friday so that they can all be at Pebble for the Saturday telecast.
The final two rounds will be played at Pebble. There is not a 36-hole cut at this event. The cut will come after all the players have played all three golf courses.
