Henrik Stenson is the only player in the world’s Top Ten missing this week at the WGC Match Play.
Why?
His reasons are pretty simple.
First, he doesn’t like the changed format. It went to round-robin play to assure every player of at least three matches. That’s simple, the goal was to keep more guys in town longer.
Second, he doesn’t like the “halved-matches” rule for this year. First three matches, no sudden-death. What happened previously is that after two matches, some players knew they had no chance to advance and were playing what amounted to a meaningless third match.
Third, Stenson would simply rather play in Houston next week as preparation for The Masters in two weeks. The folks in Houston do a good job of getting those greens almost as fast as what they’ll play on at Augusta National.
Fourth, these are independent contractors, they can play when and where they want. Stenson’s going to take this week off, remember he had knee surgery a while back and he might just need a little rest after crashing down the stretch at Bay Hill last week.
