Bryson DeChambeau didn’t waste any time getting in contention at the RBC Heritage.
After a round of 69 in cool, windy conditions on Friday, he finds himself at three-under par and just three back of co-leaders Jason Day and Kevin Chappell.
DeChambeau is in a tie for eighth and if he can finish in the top 10 come Sunday, it will be a huge move for him. A top 10 finish automatically puts him into the field at next week’s Valero Texas Open.
“I’ve been trying to keep it similar to last week,” DeChambeau said after finishing in a tie for 21st at the Masters.
“Missed a couple of putts and a couple momentum shifts,” he said of his second round where he played the back nine first and missed a six-footer for birdie at the 17th then bogeyed 18.
On the front nine, he got it going and birdied three of the first six holes on that side until he made a mistake at the par four eighth. He pulled his second shot in the water and ended up with a double-bogey six. He bounced back at the short ninth by taking driver off the tee on the 330-yard yard and finished his round with birdie.
“I think if I can make a couple more putts and get off to a good start, make birdie at two, that can push me forward and I can play pretty well,” he said of his weekend strategy.
