So you’re looking for something to do this week in San Antonio and you decide you might wander out to the TPC San Antonio to take in some PGA Tour action at the Valero Texas Open.
Who you gonna watch?
That is the $64 question.
Phil Mickelson’s in town. Sure, he’s leading the tour in scoring average, sure he finished runner-up at Pebble Beach but he missed the cut at The Masters after his caddie, Bones, assured everyone that Phil will win again at Augusta, just not this year. So you’ve got Lefty to watch if you don’t mind a guy who is just a smidge past his prime.
Zach Johnson’s playing. Well, he missed the cut at The Masters as well. Champion Golfer of the Year? He’s still got the Claret Jug but probably didn’t bring it by The Alamo.
Wait a minute, what about that DeChambeau guy? Hey, he’s an SMU Mustang and there’s gotta be an alumni chapter in San Antonio so maybe you want to join that crowd and watch the rookie who turned pro last week and promptly finished tied for fourth and collected a check just south of $260,000. Nice debut.
DeChambeau brings a lot of game. He did better than Mickelson and Johnson at The Masters and both of them have Green Jackets.
The new guy is the kid who has those weird clubs, enjoys physics and like to mess with Nick Faldo.
Can you say breath of fresh air?
There’s not much to get excited about this week but maybe DeChambeau is the guy who can change that.
Just sayin’.
