Sure, Brendan Steele is leading the Valero Texas Open thanks to rounds of 64-70 but the tournament will not have its biggest name player for the weekend.
Steele sits at 10-under, 14 shots better than Phil Mickelson, who missed the 36-hole cut and won’t be at the TPC San Antonio for the weekend.
He wasn’t the only big name to struggle.
Defending champion Jimmy Walker missed the cut after blowing up with 77 to finish eight-over par.
Same for rookie Bryson DeChambeau. His 74 put him two off the projected cut line. He fought hard all day but was another big name ready to go home after he finishes his round on Saturday morning. The cut came at even par.
Steele held a three-shot lead over Scott Langley, Charley Hoffman and Stuart Appleby. Hoffman found the going tougher on Friday. He followed his opening 66 with 71.
Patrick Reed was eight shots worse than his opening round. His 73 on Friday left him at six-under, four back of the leader.
