Rickie and Rory are back this week at Quail Hollow — as in Fowler and McIlroy — and what you might get from the Wells Fargo Championship is a preview of the 2017 PGA.
Quail Hollow will be the site of the PGA Championship next year which means the Wells Fargo will move to Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club.
But first things first.
Quail Hollow is a big-time venue and the field is a big sparse this week. Outside of Fowler and McIlroy, there is Phil Mickelson and the return of Jim Furyk, which isn’t all that exciting.
What has stolen a lot of attention this week from the regular tour is the debut of John Daly on the Champions Tour.
What the City of Charlotte needs is for both Fowler and McIlroy to step up and bring their “A” games to Quail Hollow starting Thursday. After the last two weeks on the PGA Tour, the viewing audiences are starved for some name contenders.
Mickelson hasn’t shown a propensity to return to the winner’s circle. Granted, his scoring has been good but no trophies have been hoisted by Lefty.
After disappointing performances at the Masters by Fowler and McIlroy, especially Fowler who missed the cut, the two young guns need to show that they are ready to contend in the final three majors of the season.
