If there is such a thing as a quiet break-out season, Kevin Chappell is in the midst of one.
Chappell continues to knock at victory’s door. He did it at Bay Hill, he was there once again last week at the Players Championship.
Each time, it was Jason Day leaning against the other side of the door, keeping Chappell on the outside, barely.
Chappell is now fourth, yes fourth on the PGA Tour money list. He’s put $2,960,977 in his expanding pocket this season, pre-tax of course. Still, it’s a hefty amount and it’s only May. He has climbed to his highest ranking ever in the Official World Golf Rankings — 33rd.
The former UCLA golfer, who will turn 30 in July, picked up a whopping $1,134,000 for his solo second this past Sunday in the year’s richest tournament — The Players Championship. He’s also fifth in the FedEx Cup points race, he will be in the thick of the playoffs, no doubt there.
It was his second runnerup this season. He also has a T4 at Valero and a T9 at RBC.
Chappell’s first PGA Tour win is coming, most of the talking heads agree on that.
It’s not a matter of “if” but simply “when.”
In the meantime, his accountant has a lot of work to do.
