Forever young.
If anyone can hold on to that Rod Stewart song, it’s the amazing Tom Watson.
Watson, who will turn 66 around Labor Day, defied Father Time during Thursday’s opening round at the USGA Senior Open in Sacramento.
Watson still has nearly the same swing he displayed 40 years ago and his love for the game hasn’t diminished over time. He was good enough in the first round at Del Pasco Country Club to hold a one-shot lead over a gaggle of contenders, including two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen. Wood Austin is in that group along with Michael Allen, Jeff Hart, P.H. Horgan and the presidential-sounding Jimmy Carter.
The guy to watch out for, however, is Colin Montgomerie. Monty may be the favorite and he’s off to a good start with a two-under par 68.
But it was Watson who constantly turns back the clock and battles Father Time like no other man.
