Rocco Mediate started his journey back to earth on Saturday at the PGA Senior.
For two days, he was walking in the clouds, making birdies, saving pars and keeping bogeys off his scorecard.
On Saturday at Harbor Shores, things got a little difficult. Mediate made the first of three bogeys on the day at the second hole and struggled through his round but managed to make enough putts when he needed them to salvage an even-par round of 71 that kept him in the lead.
That lead is only two shots and on Sunday, Mediate will have to go head-to-head with defending champion Colin Montgomerie. Monty shot 68 on moving day and got himself into the final pairing with a 68. Montgomerie has three senior wins, all majors and will be looking for a fourth.
Another senior superstar failed to make a move. Bernhard Langer, last week’s winner at The Tradition, could only manage an even par 71 and stayed at nine-under par, five back of Mediate.
Club pro John DalCorobbo, an assistant at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis and the reigning senior club pro champion, was alone at 11-under par after he shot 69.
Tom Lehman, Kirk Triplett and Brandt Jobe all shot 69 and were in at 10-under.
