Rickie Fowler was awful at the Masters.
He was bad once again this week at the U.S. Open.
Fowler shot rounds of 76-75, 11-over par for 36 holes and went home on Saturday.
“I didn’t drive the ball well,” was Fowler’s reason for his poor performance.
He was not alone.
Phil Mickelson, who told everyone how well he was playing coming into Oakmont, shot 74-73, seven-over and he’s gone. At age 46, time has just about run out on Mickelson to win this championship.
Rory McIlroy, the world’s No. 3, took an ugly double-bogey on his final hole of the second round. His week’s work ended on the ninth hole where his tee shot found a fairway bunker right of the fairway. His second shot caught the lip, came back in the bunker and that was it for McIlroy. McIlroy shot 77-71.
Justin Rose opened with 72 but a 75 on Saturday sent him packing.
Henrik Stenson didn’t bother to show up on Saturday. After putting himself in contention with a 69, he was 10 over through 16 holes late Friday and packed his bag and left.
He later cited “minor neck, back and knee pain” as his reason for the WD.
