He is one of professional golf’s late bloomers.
At age 37, Scott Piercy, father of three, has everyone taking notice.
In back-to-back events, the U.S. Open and WGC Bridgestone, he has finished runner-up to Dustin Johnson.
He has risen to 25th in the world rankings, an all-time best for the guy from Vegas who played his college golf at San Diego State.
He’s also got the attention of Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III. Piercy is now 11th in the point standings, right behind Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed and ahead of J.B. Holmes.
He’s a quiet man who came up through the ranks. No overnight success here. Mini-tours, Webb.com Tour (Nationwide when he competed). Earned his card in 2009. Three-time tournament winner doing it the old fashioned way — earning it.
Perhaps it was a decision he made earlier this season. Piercy was off to a very slow start, he wasn’t raising any eyebrows. He got with a new swing coach — Jeff Smith.
It’s made a difference and now Piercy is one of the hot players going into the final two majors of the season.
He can basically play his way on to the Ryder Cup team and not have to wait to be a Captain’s Pick.
Late bloomer?
Yes, but better late than never.
