Blasphemy!
Can you possibly have a British Open Championship without a links venue?
In men’s championship golf — NEVER!!!!!
In women’s championship golf, well, uh, er, we suppose the answer is yes.
The thing we love most about the Open Championship are the iconic links venues in the rota.
The 2016 Women’s British has none of that.
It will be staged at Woburn Golf Club, northeast of London. It is a Parkland-style course which in the UK means its pretty much American-style golf. Woburn’s Marquess course is beautiful, for sure, tree-lined fairways, lush grasses, everything a links course is not.
England’s Charley Hull is a member at Woburn and will have some home-field advantage but with the links factor out of the equation, it’s just another nice venue.
Which brings up the two young hot-shots in women’s golf — Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson.
If you look for favorites, they are 1-A and 1-B.
Now you might wonder if an American player has a chance, after all, the girls went out and won something called the International Crown last week, where a few teams duked it out in a match play format. The U.S. won, but you might have noticed that the top two players in the world were not there. No Ko and no Henderson means it’s simply not worth watching.
Still, Lexi Thompson, Stacy Lewis, Cristie Kerr and Gerina Piller were giggling away with their tiaras. At least Piller won something this year.
To date only Thompson and Brittany Lang have wins with Lang winning the U.S. Open which makes you wonder why she wasn’t on the International Cup team?
Can Americans possibly do the impossible and win back-to-back majors?
Stay tuned.
