The two women at the top of the U.S. Open championship are at the opposite ends of the golf achievement spectrum.
First and foremost, there is Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, winner of 41 tournaments, seven of them majors, two of those majors are U.S. Opens. She opened Thursday with a four-under par 66 at the Lancaster Country Club.
Then there is Marina Alex, who has won nothing. She has struggled mightily on the LPGA Tour this year, her best effort was a tie for ninth at the NW Arkansas event, she’s played in 13 events and missed the cut in six of them. She managed to shoot 66, a career round as far as the majors go.
Two very opposite, contrasting careers yet both have crossed paths at the top of the first round leader board.
It is an incomplete leader board as dangerous weather moved into the Lancaster, Pa. area late and just after 6 p.m., the round was suspended and will resume Friday morning.
Amy Yang finished her round before the suspension and is a shot back after posting 67.
Morgan Pressel is one of a half-dozen players who shot two-under par 68s. In all 17 players broke par.
“I think the course was set up great,” Webb observed after her day on the course. “I used every club in my bag except my six-iron.”
Four bogeys on her round dampened the day for defending champion Michelle Wie, as she shot 72.
