Rory McIlroy is already your 2016 FedEx Cup champion.
Huge win for Rory.
He still has a shot, albeit an outside one, at putting up a pretty difficult double-double.
McIlroy has an outside shot of adding the European Tour’s crown jewel to the PGA Tour’s.
The DP World Tour Championship will be contested this week in Dubai and although Henrik Stenson is basically in control, Rory’s got an outside chance to win the points race.
In order for that to happen, first and foremost, McIlroy has to win the tournament. He’s got a good shot, he’s rested and is very familiar with the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. He used to represent Jumeirah before Nike laid down a mountain of cash to have McIlroy wear The Swoosh all over himself.
McIlroy winning is not the long shot. Henrik Stenson finishing 45th or worse is. Right now, Stenson is in total control of the points standings, it’s simple math. Not only does Stenson have to fall on his face, the rest have to falter, but not as much.
Danny Willet is second, and he’s not playing well at all right now. If Rory wins, he needs to finish outside the top five, a distinct possibililty.
Alex Noren is third, he’s got a decent chance, he’s the hottest guy coming into this season finale for the Euros. He has to finish outside the top two to pave the way for McIlroy.
Rory’s the longshot, at best.
