She has won her last two events on the LPGA Tour so it should come as no surprise when you find Shanshan Feng at the top of the CME Group Tour Championship.
Feng finished with birdies on two of her final three holes at Tiburon Thursday to shoot a six-under par 66 that was good for the first round lead.
The Chinese star has stolen the headlines over the past month, somewhat overshadowing the due between world’s No. 1 Lydia Ko and No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn for Player of the Year honors.
Ko’s first day kept her in contention. She shot a two-under par 70, two shots better than Jutanugarn and her other playing partner, Brooke Henderson of Canada.
Another up-and-coming Canadian star — Charley Hull — found herself a shot off the lead along with So Yeon Ryu.
Americans Mo Martin, Lizette Salas and Ryann O’Toole were three of eight players in at 68.
Defending champion Cristie Kerr shot 71 while last year’s runnerup, Gerina Piller, bogeyed the last hole to shoot 73.
