Rory McIlroy says he’s taking advice from those who know best.
The world’s No. 2 is one the sidelines. He hurt himself on Jan. 13th on the range before his second round at the South African Open. At first he thought he “tweaked” his upper back. An MRI a few days later revealed a stress fracture in a rib.
“Quite annoying,” is how McIlroy described the injury that has put him on the shelf. He was scheduled to play next week in Dubai but that’s not going to happen.
“In situations like this you simply have to listen to the experts,” McIlroy said. “And the team I have consulted advised me to rest until my rib has fully recovered.”
The “fully recovered” is the tricky part.
McIlroy had originally hoped to come back the second week in February at the Genesis Open at Riviera in Los Angeles. But that may not happen.
As of this week, his new target date would be the first week of March at the new WGC event in Mexico (Mar. 2-5). If that is the case it would be basically six weeks of no tournament golf for Rory. That means he would miss L.A. (Genesis) and also miss the Honda at PGA National, just 15 minutes from his Florida home.
Stay tuned on this one.
