Innisbrook Resort is not your normal Florida golf course.
Sitting a short distance from the Gulf Of Mexico with Tarpon Springs just to the north, a hilly, rolling, difficult test of golf sits a short distance off the traffic-ridden U.S. Highway 19, tucked away, hidden from the rest of the hustle and bustle by towering pine trees.
When the PGA Tour gets going on Thursday, they’ll find a Copperhead course that can hand your butt to you if you’re not on your game.
You’ve got rough, trees, water, sand, swirling wind and yes, the giant Fox Squirrels.
These are squirrels like none you’ve seen. They’re huge, imagine your regular neighborhood squirrels on steroids. These guy make a living stealing food from the golf carts of resort guests when the PGA Tour is not in town and they’re good at it. They lie in wait until players head to the green then anything edible in the cart belongs to them!
Food theft at its best.
Tons of nature to go with them, Innisbrook is full of wildlife, a great setting.
Henrik Stenson is the feature attraction this week.
Stenson bowed out of the WGC Mexico event, he got knocked senseless after 11 holes with what was described as a “stomach virus.” Sure. Most of us refer to it as food poisoning.
Hopefully Stenson is fully recovered, it’s not a long drive from his home base in Lake Nona outside Orlando to Innisbrook. He has the game and the skills to win this event.
Crowds will be huge, this is a popular event in the Tampa Bay area and this is the height of the tourist season in Florida. Spring training games, it’s all happening.
Enjoy the golf and the Fox Squirrels. The crowds won’t scare ’em, they know there is food to be had.
