Advantage to the guys who showed up over the weekend to start their practice and preparation at Augusta National.
Monday was pretty much a loss, unless players got out very early. Heavy rains moved in to the Augusta area and by early afternoon, the storms got worse and the course was shut down and the patrons sent home.
Such is springtime in the South.
Weather will be an issue this week but the front that was predicted to hit on Thursday and jeopardize the first round, will come early and it could totally wipe out the Par Three contest. No big loss there. It’s increasingly become a horse-and-pony show over the years with the young children of many competitors taking swipes at their father’s putts, insuring that dad won’t win the contest and thus avoiding the long-standing jinx.
No Par Three contest winner has ever gone on to win the tournament and don’t you think the competitors pay attention to that? For most of his career, Tiger Woods chose to not even participate on Wednesdays. Smart move.
Tuesday’s weather looks good for most of the field to get their final prep work in. Wednesday is normally a short day anyway with the course being shut down at noon so the massive army of grounds crew members can prep the course for Thursday morning.
The weather looks really good for the tournament now with just a slight, 20 percent chance of rain on Thursday and nothing but good weather predicted the rest of the way.
Sweet!
