Those who were looking for some early morning magic from Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship on Saturday were disappointed.
Woods, who came out to finish his second round, stood at four-over par with five holes to play. He needed to make two birdies to play the weekend — the 36-hole cut shaping at two-over par at Whistling Straits.
Instead of a charge, Woods put himself behind the eight-ball right off the bat when he failed to get up-and-down for par at 14 and went to five-over. He would par 15 and 16 then he rolled in a 15-footer for birdie at 17 and wrapped it up with a par at 18.
“A little too late,” he said of his birdie. “My lines were off,” he said of his putting setup. There was a buzz that filtered all the way to Greensboro that he will play in next week’s Wyndham Championship. “We’ll decide the next couple of day,” Woods said of his intent. “I’ll sit with my team and we’ll decide what’s best.”
Woods would have to win in Greensboro to make the season-ending PGA Tour playoffs but he said he still has golf to play. “I have a lot of golf, some overseas events,” he said.
“It takes time,” Woods said, trying to convince listeners that he’s making progress. “I haven’t put together ball striking and putting. It’s been either one or the other, but not both. Maybe for a day, but not for an entire event. I just need to get more consistent in tournament golf.”
