Probably not a stretch to declare this a first in the history of any USGA event.
Shanshan Feng made USGA history on Thursday at the U.S. Women’s Open by shooting 66 while wearing cow-print clothing.
Feng looked like she escaped from one of those Chick-Fil-A commercials.
One thing Feng won’t have to worry about is anyone else showing up with the same outfit — ever.
She’s got an entire collection of cow-print outfits courtesy of Pro-Simon, her Taiwanese clothier.
At least she’s easy to “spot.”
She also played a perfect round to take a one-shot lead over Amy Yang.
Feng made a pair of three-hole birdie runs. She started on the back nine and birdied 11, 12 and 13 then got hot again with three more at 17, 18 and one. She finished her day off with eight straight pars.
Lydia Ko, the former world’s No. 1, was two back after opening with 68.
Cristie Kerr, who is a friend of property owner and U.S. President Donald Trump — was the low American of the first round with a 69. Angela Stanford shot 70, Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis were in at 71, one-under.
Shock of the day came when Ariya Jutanugarn finished with a 79. She missed the cut at the Women’s PGA and is looking like she won’t be around this weekend either.
She has been suffering from a sore right shoulder and it is apparently acting up again.
Play was interrupted around 4:30 by strong storms that produced rain and lightning. After a two-hour delay, play resumed. It helped Michelle Wie, who is battling neck problems and nearly withdrew before the delay. After the delay she played one-under coming in, finished with a 73 and kept herself in line to make the 36-hole cut. But the pain was too much for Wie as play resumed early Friday morning and she withdrew after playing one hole.
