Steph Curry did not embarrass himself Thursday at the Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic.
The kid did pretty darn good. Really.
And here’s something no one anticipated:
Steph Curry beat the No. 2 player on the Web.com Tour.
Sam Ryder has already punched his ticket to next year’s PGA Tour. He’s No. 2 on the Web.com money list with $255,124 in winnings. He has a victory at the Pinnacle Bank Championship and four other top 10s to his credit.
But he couldn’t take down his basketball-playing partner in the first round action at TPC Stonebrae.
First things first.
Curry shot a not-so-bad four-over par 74 so all the prop bettors who wagered he would break 80 can cash their tickets.
Curry had five bogeys, a double and three birdies for his opening effort. He nipped Ryder by a shot as the No. 2 guy on the tour shot 75. No one saw that coming.
Curry hit six of 11 fairways, seven of 15 greens and he was smiling all day.
“An amazing experience,” was how Curry summed up his Web.com debut.
He was a full 10 shots off the lead of the 64 by Brandon Harkins.
This is the tour where you go low or go home on the weekend as 80 players in the field shot under par.
