Hideki Matsuyama probably didn’t see this coming.
After shooting about a hundred under par last year at the HSBC Champions, you’d figure he would have a pretty good handle on the Sheshan International Golf Club outside Shanghai.
Or maybe not.
Hideki-san had a rough first day on the other side of the world. He shot 74 to land near the bottom of the field.
The defending champion found himself a full 10 shots first round leader Brooks Koepka.
Koepka shot 64 with a three-putt from four feet on the third hole. Turned a possible 62 into 64.
Gavin Green and Kiradech Aphibarnrat were a shot back with 65s.
Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson opened with 68s.
