Last week it was Ryan Armour earning his biggest career payday.
This week, the PGA Tour’s concert-tour for its newcomers and downtrodden continues out in Las Vegas.
Last year, Rod Pampling resurrected his lifeless career with a victory at the TPC Summerlin.
This week’s stop is the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open, which is a mouthful if you try and say that five times real fast.
Basically its a great charity in a town where gambling takes center stage. This week the field will have its usual compliment of “who are those guys?” teeing it up in this silly crossover season.
It’s sorta like a “Go Fund Me” for the new guys and the tired old guys. Gives them a chance to get a leg up on expenses for a long year. Even more important, it gives them a place in the field, something they don’t get in he bigger events on the PGA Tour schedule.
Scoring should be low. Pampling went 20-under last year and you’d expect more of that this week.
You glance over this field and you start noticing a guy like Tony Finau, who has plenty of game to win in the bigger events and certainly has to be someone to watch in these, ah-hem, lesser fields.
Webb Simpson has finally adjusted to putting without the club jammed up in his stomach. He’s even got a major on his resume, which makes him a huge draw on a week like this.
Good news is that this week’s winner will take home north of $1 million.
Last week Armour pocketed a measly $774,000. But to a guy like Armour, it might as well have been a million.
