Jason Day took his momentum from the Barclays to the 10th tee Friday at the TPC Boston.
Day, who ran away from the rest of the PGA Tour field last week, rocketed out of the blocks at the Deutsche Bank championship with birdies at his first three holes, canning putts of three feet, 12 feet and 18 feet.
Day, who now has four wins on the season, found himself five-under par in difficult conditions through his first 13 holes but a bogey at the fifth, his 14th hole of the day then a three-putt from 45 feet at the final hole dropped him to three-under for his round.
Day’s 68 left him just a shot off the pace of early leaders Colt Knost and Luke Donald.
Day’s playing partner, Jordan Spieth, found himself in the same bogey mode he was last week.
Spieth first nine holes (the back nine) at TPC Boston were a horror show. He had bogeys at the 11th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th holes. At the 14th, he putted his ball off the green with his first putt. His only birdie came at the 15th and he turned in 39.
His final nine was a mixed bag with three birdies and three bogeys coming home and it added up to 75 and a tie for 89th, leaving him in danger of missing the cut for the second straight week in these FedEx Cup playoffs.
The third member of the feature group, Bubba Watson, fared a bit better than Spieth but barely with a two-over par 73.
