At age 41, the seeds of doubt were creeping into the mind of Pat Perez.
Was he done? Was this the beginning of the end of a controversial career?
This week, a year ago at the OHL Classic in Mayakoba, it was the new beginning for Pat Perez, the start of a year like no other in his career.
He won this event at El Cameleon and started a comeback that would have earned him Comeback Player Of The Year, but the PGA Tour doesn’t give that anymore, so DogLegNews will — say hello to Pat Perez — DogLegNews Comeback Player Of The Year.
He went on to win just north of $4.361 million. That’ll help the old bank account.
Perez, who fought a volatile temper in his prime, made to East Lake and the final 30 for the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time. He eventually finished 11th on last year’s money list.
Just to prove he’s still trending up, he won the CIMB in Malayasia last month and is the current FedEx Cup points leader coming into Mayakoba as the defending champion.
Perez readily admits: “I’m the old guy.”
But he insists he’ll just keep doing what he’s doing. Don’t look for him in the gym.
