We’re starting our New Year on the Lesson Tee with some Hall Of Fame instruction from Tom Watson, who shows us something that was one of Jack Nicklaus’ key fundamentals.
It’s all about head position in the golf swing.
Worst thing you’ll ever hear is another amateur tell you that you need to “Keep your head down” in the golf swing.
That’s totally incorrect.
It’s all about spine angle AND the position of your head, which needs to remain steady throughout the swing.

It’s more important, as Watson points out, is that you need to be sure that your head does not move up and down (bobbing) in the swing.
Watson talks about how Jack used to start his swing by tilting his head toward his right shoulder. Nicklaus explained that position helps create room for your shoulder turn. It also put Nicklaus’ left eye looking at the ball and Jack was left-eye dominant.
The real death move in a golf swing is when you see an amateur start the downswing by moving the head forward. Nothing good can happen with that move. It’s a double-bogey move or worse.
So work on keeping your head in a steady position. If you tilt your spine properly — as in left shoulder higher than the right, your head will be in good position. Make sure it stays there.
If you practice with a friend and you have a problem moving your head, have them stand behind you and hold a club out with the grip next to your head — perfect reminder NOT to move your head forward as it will touch up against the grip.
Keep it steady and you’ll hit more quality golf shots.
