The United States team came up with a significant upset in the morning on Day One of the Solheim Cup matches at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany.
Morgan Pressel and controversial captain’s pick Paula Creamer got a 3-and-2 win over Europe’s strongest pairing — Anna Nordqvist and Suzann Petterson in the foursomes (alternate shot) format.
The other U.S. point came from Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr, who held off a late charge by Karin Icher and Azahara Munoz to claim a 2-and-1 win.
Brits Charley Hull and Melissa Reid downed Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome, 2-and-1 while Sandra Gal and Catorina Matthew bested Stacy Lewis and Lizette Salas, 3-and-2.
“We made a big putt at the first hole, drew first blood and kept ahead of them the rest of the day,” Morgan Pressel said after her team’s victory over the top European duo.
