The team of Jay Haas and son Bill made the cut Friday at the Zurich Classic and in the process, Jay became the oldest player to make a cut at a PGA Tour event.
The 68-year-old Haas had to make a nervous five-footer at the 18th hole to get himself and Bill into the weekend. Bill made it even harder on his dad when he hit his tee shot at the par three 17th into the water and the team had to work to save bogey.
It’s evident while the younger Haas is struggling to keep his PGA Tour card — he’s not playing well. In Thursday’s best-ball (four-ball) format, his father made the most birdies for the team.
They shot 65 on Thursday then put up a one-under par 71 on Friday that got them to eight-under and they made the cut on the number.
From Heroes Back To Zeroes:
On Thursday the team of non-card holders Robert Garrigus and Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey were right in the thick of the action with an 11-under par 71. On Friday, they fell back to earth.
The two had a miserable day in the alternate shot format and combined for a six-over par 78 that took them all the way back to five-under par and that sent them home early.
There’s A New “Two Gloves”:
With Tommy Gainey no longer holding a PGA Tour card, there’s still a player on Tour wearing golf gloves on both hands.
Rookie Aaron Rai, a winner on the DP World Tour, is playing with fellow rookie David Lipsky, who also got his experience in Europe. Rai wears gloves and both hands. Rai and Lipsky opened with 61 on Thursday and added a 67 on Friday and head to the weekend just a shot behind record-setting leaders Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Rai and Lipsky will be paired with the leaders in the final group on Saturday.
Fleetwood, Garcia Miss The Cut:
Biggest name duo to miss the 36-hole cut were European Ryder Cuppers Tommy Fleetwood and his teammate Sergio Garcia.
They were expected to do well in this event but were only five-under for the first two days, missing the cut by three shots.
