Brooks Koepka’s left wrist looks strong, looked totally okay during Thursday’s first round at the Zurich Classic.
It was also strong enough to drag Marc Turnesa around the front nine at the TPC Louisiana.
Koepka came up with three birdies over his team’s first nine holes. Turnesa had three bogeys.
Turnesa couldn’t help his partner at the par four 15th when Koepka made bogey. Turnesa came up with his own and the team fell back to two-under for the day.
Koepka bounced back with a birdie at the 16th then on 17 it happened — Turnesa made his one and only birdie of the day and helped his partner out on one hole out of the 18. Turnesa hit a splendid tee shot on the 190-yard hole. His ball stopped just five feet from the cup and he holed the birdie putt to get the team to four-under.
Koepka’s power showed up on the par five 18th. He hit the green in two then two-putted from 28 feet to complete a birdie-birdie-birdie finish for a five-under 67.
But five-under wasn’t good enough to get them into the top 35 — that’s where the Friday cut will come. The Koepka-Turnesa team is tied for 47th.
Bad news is that Friday is alternate shot and that may prove a difficult situation for Turnesa, who is ranked 1,929 in the world rankings.
The top 35 and ties will make it to the weekend.
