Dustin Johnson has been the No. 1 player in the world for 64 straight weeks.
That run has finally come to an end.
It’s over because Johnson simply hasn’t done enough since winning early this year. He didn’t do enough on Sunday at The Players either.
Justin Thomas will take his place, rising to the top of the heap at the tender age of 25.
J.T. sealed it with a great final day at the Stadium Course. His final round 66 got him to 11-under par and a tie for 11th. That was where D.J. need to finish to hang on to the top spot but he couldn’t.
Johnson’s even par 72 on Sunday left him at 10-under par and tied for 17th.
J.T. got off to a good start with three birdies and an eagle on the front nine. A tee ball in the water at No. 7 prevented him from going really low but he still turned in 33, three under.
Three more birdies and a bogey-free final nine sewed it up for Thomas.
He struggled at times over the past two months, knowing he was close to overtaking Johnson.
But this week, J.T. simply let it come to him.
