If the PGA Tour wants a fifth major then it should spend more time with The Champions sideshow.
The first of five for the senior set got underway in rainy Birmingham Thursday and it was The World’s Most Interesting Golfer setting the tone.
Cigar-smoking, wine sipping, Ferrari-driving Miguel Angel Jimenez didn’t let a one-hour, 17-minute rain delay bother him at The Regions. All he did was hustle in and beat the second wave of storms to shoot an eight-under par 64.
That was good for a two-shot lead.
Steve Stricker, one of the favorites coming into Greystone Golf and Country Club, was three shots back after a 67 while defending champion Bernhard Langer’s 70 left him six back of the fun-loving Spanish leader.
The rain delay came at mid-day with another storm approaching late.
“I missed my drive on the last hole because we were rushing to finish,” Jimenez said after he failed to birdie the par five closing hole.
