Everything was set up perfectly for Henrik Stenson Saturday at the Tour Championship.
It was wet, rainy and the course set-up by the PGA Tour would not allow for any low scores.
Stenson kept his lead until he bogeyed the 17th at East Lake then watched playing partner Jordan Spieth steal it from him with a 20-foot birdie putt at the 18th.
Spieth’s final birdie gave him a 68 in the rainy conditions, it got him to eight-under par and gave him a one-shot lead over Stenson going into Sunday’s finale with everything on the line.
It will likely be a two-man shoot out on Sunday between Spieth and Stenson. East Lake is totally waterlogged and won’t yield low scores. Rickie Fowler’s 67 was the best round and it got him to four-under, tied with Paul Casey but they’re four back of Spieth, whose putter has come alive when he needed it.
Spieth scrambled all day. He birdied the par five ninth to turn in even par but birdies at the 15th and 18th got him the lead.
Stenson seemed to be in control on the front bot three back-nine bogeys saw him lose his lead.
The math is really simple going into Sunday. If Spieth wins, he wins the FedEx Cup, if Stenson wins, he wins the FedEx Cup. If Fowler wins, he wins the FedEx Cup. Jason Day is at even par and eight shots back, he is not going to win the FedEx Cup.
Simple as that.
