So Yeon Ryu turned 28 this week and is in position to give herself a huge birthday present.
Ryu took over at the Women’s PGA Championship Saturday at Kemper Lakes thanks to a spectacular back nine. The world’s fifth-ranked player fashioned four birdies coming home, shot 67 and will go into the final round with a three-shot lead over Canada’s Brooke Henderson.
Ryu began the final round in a three-way tie with Henderson and Sung Hyun Park but back nine troubles got to Henderson and Park simply couldn’t find enough birdies to keep up.
Henderson missed a nine-footer for birdie at the 18th hole that would have kept the lead at two. She posted 70 to finish at eight-under par.
Park’s 71 left her seven-under, where she started the day, for back of Ryu.
Closest American to the lead was Angel Yin. Her 68 moved her t six-under.
Ryu looked cool and calm all day in the Chicagoland heat and she goes into Sunday with a golden opportunity to score her third major championship.
