Harold Varner III has his first-ever 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour.
Kelly Kraft is there with him at The Greenbrier and both are hoping to bring home their first PGA Tour win Sunday at A Military Tribute.
Varner started his third round with 10 straight pars then played his last eight holes four-under on his way to a 66, 14-under par.
Kraft found himself leading by two shots with three holes to play but he missed short par putts on two of the last three holes, including one from four feet at the closing par three 18th. Those stumbles dropped him from 16-under and into a tie with Varner after posting 69.
“Today was super solid,” said Varner. “I’m just playing really well. Mentally, I’m excited to play golf.”
Sunday is a big day for both as they look for that break-through victory. There is, however, a packed field of accomplished challengers behind them.
Kevin Na and Xander Schauffele both shot 65s and will play together in the next-to-last pairing, starting a shot back at 13-under par.
Sam Saunders, grandson of the late Arnold Palmer was alone at 12-under and looking for his first victory.
Biggest name in the hunt is Bubba Watson. Watson’s 65 on Saturday pulled him within three and he came from farther back at The Travelers for his third win of the season. “I need to have a big day (on Sunday) and the leaders need to have not such a big day,” Watson said as he goes after a fourth win of 2018.
