The Marathon Classic was there for Brittany Lincicome to win on Sunday.
She chose to lose it.
Lincicome needed a three-foot birdie at the 72nd hole at Highland Meadows Golf Club to walk away with a win but she stared in disbelief when her ball performed a 360-degree lip-out.
She finished at 14-under par and was forced to play-off with Thidapa Suwannapura of Thailand. On paper it looked like a mis-match. Lincicome the two-time major champion with eight total victories against the winless Suwannapura.
But momentum was on Suwannapura’s side. She finished eagle-birdie for 65 while the long-hitting Lincicome failed to birdie either of the two par five closing holes and finished with 67.
Lincicome didn’t waste any time messing up the playoff. She drove into a fairway bunker at the 18th then hit her layup into the water short of the green. She managed to save a par but watched as Suwannapura hit her third within three feet then holed the birdie putt or her first LPGA victory.
Lincicome now heads for Kentucky for the Barbasol Classic where she’ll compete against the men on the PGA Tour. Barbasol is one of Lincicome’s sponsors and invited her to compete at the Keene Trace Golf Club.
