They got out early, shot low scores then went home and had the afternoon off Friday in Akron.
First round leader Ian Poulter has company after 36 hole at the WGC Firestone. Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas tore it up early to claim a piece of the 36-hole lead with Poulter.
The trio is in at 11-under. Fleetwood shot the day’s best round — a 63 while J.T. was just a shot back with a 64. Poulter’s 67 was good enough for him to keep a piece of the lead.
They are a couple shots ahead of Jason Day (66) and Kyle Stanley (68) and three clear of Rory McIlroy (67) and Si Woo Kim (68).
Luke List (67) and Haotong Li (68) go into the weekend three back of the lead trio.
To find Tiger Woods, you have to look at the group that is five off the lead. Woods, who started the day four back of Poulter, shot 68 and lost a shot to the leaders.
“I didn’t quite hit the putts hard enough today,” said Woods, who didn’t sink the big birdie putts like he did in the first round. “I’m gonna have to go out there (Saturday) and post a low one.”
Woods has quality company at six-under, a total of six players there including Tony Finau and Jon Rahm.
