Lexi Thompson Is Back - But Is She Really Back? - Dog Leg News

About the author

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

    Terrific article, Tom.

There is a somewhat local, analogous situation. Elena DelleDonne, now a WNBA player, was heralded as a prodigy since she was young, as possibly one of the best women basketball players ever.

She was set to go to U Conn to basketball glory, and just found it wasn’t working for her. She took some time off, and played volleyball for a year in her home state at U of Delaware. Elena ended up playing hoops at U of Del, went on the WNBA, and recently married her partner. From all reports, she has a happy, fulfilling life. It just took her some time to figure out the right path for herself.

It must be noted that Elena has an extremely strong, close, and supportive family. I have thought that was probably true of Lexi as well.

Obviously, circumstances are different in each situation, but, boy, it seems like some dialogue with Elena would really be good for Lexi.

RM: Great thoughts, thanks for sharing. Being a prodigy is tough, especially nowdays…..the South Koreans are basically put into golf-learning factories at age 5.
